Happy 4th of July from Camp Robin Hood

I know I keep saying the same thing but sometimes it feels like groundhog day up here. I am writing this and looking out over the quad from my desk.  It’s perfectly clean and quiet but only 45 minutes ago it was a giant fairground. Bouncy houses / 8 booths/ an ice cream truck and 450 happy smiling people. I love a CRH parade and we had a great one to start off the festivities late this morning after being woken up by our Saxons and Scribes who decorated the dining hall. Chuck spoke about family and the meaning of July 4th at breakfast and the rest is just a blur to me…

For 92 summers kids have come to the Realm from far and wide. Andy Friedman loved the July 4th atmosphere and I have great memories of watching him with awe in the ’70s. To think that in spite of how much the world has changed in the last 92 years -we still do many things the same way here at camp.  That’s what makes this place so special and so important to all our kids.  They need stability and structure and the chance to honor the past.

We have so many more Realm tradition boxes to check off in the next 5 weeks. Beach day / Movie under the stars / So you think you can dance/ Scribe song/  13 and 15 U basketball tournaments / visiting day / excursions  / founder’s night / closing banquet / Saxon and scribe speeches and of course the grand daddy of them all Green and White ……

We are so privileged to be here as I reminded the kids at lunch today. Because of your parent’s generosity, we all are able to live life the way tens of thousands have before us and please g-d thousands more will in the next 92 years.

Mount Washington Hike

As is tradition, our two oldest boys and girls groups the Saxons and Scribes woke up early to climb the tallest mountain in Northeastern New England, Mt. Washington!

After a big breakfast at camp and then dividing into three groups based on their hiking ability at the base of the mountain, they set out to conquer the 6,288-foot giant underneath a slightly cloudy and blue sky.

The few first couples of hours provided great conversation and a few spectacular views before the wind and clouds picked up. Braving the sudden drop in temperature and aching muscles we’re happy to say that every camper made it to the summit! Our head of trips notes that it may have been the fastest up and down hike of Washington in quite some time. Well done Saxons and Scribes and to our wonderful trips staff!

The Circus Came To Town

We welcomed July with bright sun and a lot of excitement here in the Realm. As we begin our second week, we are going full throttle.

Intercamp has begun! This morning, the 13 and under girls and the 10 and under girls left from breakfast for inter camp volleyball and basketball at Camp Wicosuta and the 12 and under boys left for a soccer tournament at Winaukee.

Meanwhile, here in camp, we welcomed teachers and performers from The Boston Circus Guild. They spent the day offering workshops for campers. Under their supervision, campers got to try acrobatic skills, balance and juggling tricks, and tried out some aerial maneuvers. It was a thrill to see the concentration on their faces as they learned a few tricks of the trade. After dinner, the Guild treated us all to an amazing performance.

As I left camp before the campers arrived and returned last night, I have enjoyed soaking up the positive energy here at camp. It’s a treat to see the myriad smiles, to chat with campers from all over the world (my favorite conversation consisted of a hard core discussion about recent NBA trades with campers from New York and Boston), and to see the Realm truly humming. More happens in a day here that I could ever share, but rest assured that Robin Hood is rocking.

The Rain Can’t Keep Us Down

Greetings from Camp Robin Hood!

Following the week one mark of summer 2019, we enjoyed a relaxing Lazy Sunday morning and began activities at 10am today. Senior campers had the opportunity to bond with their groups in the cabins, girls camp, boys camp, and on the freshly mowed central quad; junior campers continued the first round of their intensives, including but not limited to basketball, swimming, soccer, tennis, ceramics, painting, and drama. While morning periods ran, our Quills went out on an incredible nature hike before returning to camp in the early afternoon.

A storm came in prior to lunch, but that didn’t stop us! We ate in the dining hall and danced to music until the rain calmed. Afterwards, senior camp boys played indoor basketball, senior camp girls played in girls camp, and junior campers geared up for color war by practicing the infamous tradition of cracker eating in the theater with the Head of Boys Camp, Sam Jonas, and our Program Director, Julia Cohen. When the sun started to shine again, our group leaders came together to lead campers to awesome activities on our fields; kids were playing kickball, ultimate frisbee, red rover, and soccer!

We’ll enjoy our Sunday ice cream sundaes for dessert tonight before heading to the theater to watch The Greatest Showman for a VERY special event on the agenda tomorrow… the circus is coming to Robin Hood!!! We look forward to sharing more details about the experience in tomorrow’s
Woodchuck!

Day 7 in the Realm

It was a BIG day here at the REALM. I will be brief this evening as I am running out of the office to say good night to our campers then attending a Green and White meeting at my house.  Shhhh

The sun was out all day and we took full advantage of it. Today was the first day of Intensives, the Bards and Shires hiked a mountain together, and we had 4 ski boats running on the lake. Our 15U basketball team traveled to West End for the official start of our intercamp athletic season and I had the honor of being the Master of Ceremonies at the BEST junior camp talent show ever. I am always amazed at how talented our campers are.

My personal highlight was watching our staff cheer on the junior campers during the talent show.  They were beaming from ear to ear like proud parents.  After one full week I am delighted to say we are ONE big happy family.

I have the greatest job in the world and cannot that you enough for sharing your kids with me
