Woodchuck — Spirit Day!

Intercamp sports are in full swing! Today we hosted Camp Kenwood Evergreen in a “Spirit Day” for girls ages 9-12. The Quills, Bows, Jesters, and Tumblers were all involved. We started bright and early at 9:30 this morning on four different sports fields or courts. We played basketball, soccer, kickball/softball, and volleyball/newcomb. After a slow start, Robin Hood then went on to win the next 12 games, totaling the final score to be 12-4 in our favor.

In the afternoon, we had our annual July 4th carnival that was rescheduled due to rain from the day before. It comprised of four different stations. First, was the quad with carnival games, food, ice cream, and even a marriage booth. Secondly, there were water-themed inflatables on the homerun diamond that even included a dunk tank. Thirdly, we had a dance party in the barn. We then ended with everyone having a chance at a beach party at the waterfront. It was by far the best weather day of the summer.

Tonight was cookout followed by evening activities, and you best believe most–if not all–groups will end the night with Candy Canteen. As Woody would say, today was a big, big day. But as typically happens here in The Realm, tomorrow will always exceed today’s activities.

Sweet dreams from The Realm.

Woodchuck — July 4th Traditions

We woke up this morning with the excitement of July 4th in the air. We made the decision at 6:45am to make July 4th a two-day extravaganza. We did the wake up call, had our usual dining hall breakfast party and our annual parade this afternoon – but due to weather concerns AGAIN … we moved our carnival until tomorrow afternoon because for the first time in the last 3 weeks the forecast is for clear skies and hot temps!

That’s one of the many incredible things we can do up here. We moved our spirit day competition up to 9:00 am with Camp Kenwood Evergreen for all our 4 youngest girls groups. This will allow us to hold our annual July 4th fair tomorrow after a great day here at the Realm today. I love how we can change everything at the last minute. The kids only care about one thing – FUN. We always have the answer to  “what’s next?”

I remember being a junior camper and marching in the annual July 4th parade. We had horses and a ton of pageantry. Andy would always lead the parade dressed to the nines. He had an old fire truck on camp that as Jugglers we were able to ride in. One of the special things we do at CRH is honor our past. We do many of the same things that children did 96 years ago during our first summer.

The Magic in the Trees only grows stronger here at Camp Robin Hood every year. Our campers’ laughter and joy is the best fertilizer of all time ……

Love,

Woody

Woodchuck — Major Fun on Mt. Major

“Meet at the gas pump at 9:20!” Woody announced excitedly on the microphone at breakfast. With that, the Quills and the Foresters began to prepare themselves for a big day off camp. The rest of the dining hall held in their excitement as they awaited their in-camp schedules. “I really hope we get to play wiffleball today,” Sam said.

Waking up this morning to rain seemed like nothing new, even though everyone at The Realm dreamt of the sun. Around 10:00 am the clouds began to clear and the sky brightened, but Robin Hood was already off having a great day.

The Foresters traveled to a neighboring camp for a three-team basketball tournament. After returning to camp with one win and one loss, Ian said, “We can win that one game, I know it.” He and the squad were clear to note that they, “can’t wait to play that team again.” They will be practicing their sets and shooting free throws until they get the opportunity to step back on the court for more inter-camp play.

The Quills laced up their hiking boots and set off for Mt. Major. With bagged lunches in hand, they managed to get up and down the mountain in what seemed like record timing. “We were ready–it was easy!” they all chimed in. All of camp was impressed.

With the Fourth of July on the horizon and Sunday Sundaes behind us, Robin Hood has a lot to look forward to. The Jesters can’t wait for the popcorn tomorrow. The Squires are on the soccer field for what seems like hours. The Tumblers are debating what cozy corner flavor is best after a fun afternoon getting ice cream. The Archers continue to reel in fish from early-morning pontoon boat rides.

This is just business as usual at The Realm.

Goodnight from CRH.

Woodchuck — Rain or Shine

Greetings from the Realm,

After 25 years at Robin Hood, I still love the place in the rain. Activities are still rolling. Some a
bit different but kids are still moving and enjoying the place.

We had our first Lazy Sunday. Campers can sleep in and come into breakfast later if they want.
Most of our junior campers were still up bright and early, fishing, playing sports and getting
ready for the best breakfast of the week. Lots of choices and a chance for campers and staff to
sit with anyone they want in camp.

Our senior camp waterfront was still running in the rain where the Lancers got a chance this
morning and the TPs in this afternoon – followed by a hot shower. This afternoon the girls
camp ran a fun game of “How well do you know your Group Leader” in the theatre.

Our junior camp played in a big Bingo game with lots of prizes – you may not believe it, but this
game blows away any game at the senior center in Florida! Each group played at least one
game outside, then warmed up with a hot shower and joined one of our indoor activities.

The two most exciting parts of the day was our Sunday sundaes after dinner. Scott was in
charge of picking the lottery which decides what group goes next to the sundae bar!

Our evening culminated with our staff talent show. The night was electric! Our staff is loaded
with talent The first-year aides put on a master class of dance, while the second-year aides
made the room scream with delight. Our Male Leadership sang Country Road, and our Female
Leadership brought the house down with a dance. The Trip staff put on a musical performance
on the piano and the waterfront staff danced up a storm. One counselor sang a song from
Hamilton and the entire camp joined in and erupted following his performance. The Brass
closed the show with some Magic from Rick – which no one still can figure out and some sort of
fake toothbrush dance which was cut off by the health center.

Like all nights at the theatre, we ended arm and arm singing the Good Night Song and Evening
Shades. It’s still raining, but nothing stops Robin Hood!

Sweet Dreams from the Realm.
